Many people know the game BOULES (pronounced 'bool') from their French holidays and are confused when they hear the name PETANQUE (pronounced 'pay-tonk'). In fact they are both names for the same game. The sport can be played by teams of three players (triples), two players (doubles) or a straight head-to-head between two single players. The object of each end is to get more of your boules closest to the jack than your opponent (each one that is closer scores one point) and the team/player to score 13 points first wins the game. You can learn the rules here. Pétanque is a sport that is enjoyed by all the family, it can be played for fun in the garden or more seriously up to World Championship level.
We play in the Central Herts Petanque League and in the Independent Petanque League. The leagues are played on Monday and Wednesday evenings respectively from April to September. We also play in knock-out tournaments based on these leagues and others around Hertfordshire and further afield. Our ‘home’ pitch is located at The Brown Bear,Braughing.
Both leagues are ‘fun’ leagues although we do follow the rules of the
English Pétanque Association. League matches consist of two games of triples and three games of pairs starting about 8pm and finishing about 10. The team consists of a minimum of 6 players up to a maximum of 12 and we are constantly on the look-out for new players. There is no age limit.
