My grandfather, Alfred King, came to live in Braughing towards the end of the 19th century. All we know is that he tramped the roads, then entered the village and knocked on the door of a lady called May; he was only about 11 or 12 years old, we believe, but she took him in and he lived with her until he left home for London to work. I myself visited "Auntie May" as we knew her when we lived in Stevenage in the 1950's, she was a very old, jolly lady. What I remember most was the dry closet in the garden! Does this story ring any bells with Braughing residents? Just a shot in the dark - we didn't know this part of our family history until the death of Alfred's sister last year. Her name was also May: as the first child of Alfred and his wife Jessie, he obviously had fond memories of the time spent in Braughing. Any help would be much appreciated: May lived near the main street, we didn't have to walk far from the 'bus. Thanking you in anticipation.
