It is now safe for another year to stop hiding your acting, singing or comedy talents, because rehearsals for the new season’s Music Hall are well under way, and we have a full on-stage cast. Mostly familiar faces, but with new acts for your delectation. We are aiming to put on 16 performances this season, and lots of organisations in the village will be hoping to sell you tickets during the next few months. But we do have a problem…………. |

Dear friends at Braughing, Furneux and Stocking Pelham We write to say how overwhelmed we were by your love, good wishes and gifts to us at the end of Clive’s 19 months holding the fort in the three St. Mary’s during the vacancy between parish priests. Your generosity to us was very humbling and enabled us to have a lovely and refreshing ten days holiday. We look forward to a couple of theatre trips with the tokens from Stocking Pelham, and we are using our glasses and steadily working our way through the wine from Braughing! The ‘Furneux tankard’ so beautifully inscribed will continue to be treasured and, no doubt, frequently filled and emptied. It has been a real privilege to be involved with the three Church families and communities and we thank God for the many new friends we have made. We look forward to being involved with the life of the Churches in the future, and to assisting Jeanette and Chris in the ministry. With our love and blessings.

It seems to be generally accepted that the aviation book of the greatest literary merit to emerge from the Second World War is “The Last Enemy” by Richard Hillary. A few years ago, Hillary was the subject of a critically acclaimed biography by David Ross, and, more recently, was discussed by Booker prizewinner Sebastian Faulks in his book “The Fatal Englishman”. In his biography, David Ross deals at some length with Hillary’s time at Oxford, his being shot down in the Battle of Britain, his recovery from the awful burns he suffered, his affair with the actress Merle Oberon and his controversial death. David lives in Northumberland and, on one of his frequent visits to the south, has agreed to speak to our Society. He calls his talk “Richard Hillary and 603 Squadron”. The meeting will be at 8 pm on Wednesday 26th October in the Old Boys’ School. Len Howett |
