A local New Year Print E-mail
Braughing residents had a truly local party on News Years Eve. The Church Hall was packed with locals enjoying a pleasant evening accompanied by entertainment, a quiz and wonderful home made food. Marjorie Howard master minded the idea of giving everyone an inexpensive and community spirited event. Marjorie recognised that for many, New Years Eve can be lonely or expensive, so why not create a party that every one can afford and to celebrate together with friends. Everyone was asked to bring and share their food and drink with the party.

A buffet dinner was served, comprising of all the locally prepared dishes, followed by the entertainment. This included Lynn and Andy Peat, who sang a duet. Rita Glazebrook gave a recitation on years gone by, Margaret Ribbons on Cockney rhyming slang followed by a demonstration by the Braughing Clangers (aka hand bell ringers).

The evening was a great success, which is a great credit to Marjorie and all her helpers. On behalf of the village a very big thank you.

New Year at St Mary's Print E-mail
At thirty minutes to midnight the traditional half muffled bells were rang by the Braughing Bell Ringers for about twenty minutes to signal the end of the year. The muffles were then removed ready for midnight. Local villagers gathered at the church to join the bellringers to welcome the New Year.

At midnight (with the aid of the BBC and its Big Ben chimes) the tenor bell was rang twelve times to signal to the village that the New Year had arrived. This year, David Williamson had the honour of ringing the tenor bell, with great success. Well done to David.

As soon as he had completed the 12 o’clock ringing, the rest of the ringers joined David again to ring again for another ten minutes or so to celebrate the New Year. Many people from the village party in the nearby Church Hall came over to the church, whilst others opened their doors to listen and take in what is a traditional part of New Year in Braughing.
