The Braughing Parish Paths Group was formed in 2004 with the encouragement of the Parish Council Committee to promote the enjoyment of the Public Rights of Way in the Parish and to monitor their maintenance.  There are 37 Rights of Way in the Parish totalling over 21 miles.  These are shown on the Definitive Map and listed in the Definitive Statement which are maintained by Herts County Council.  There is lots more information about the Definitive Map and Rights of Way on the HCC website

Starting in 2006 the group have organised walks on the first Sunday of each month during the summer.  Each walk has a nominated leader and starts from the village square at 2pm, and ends back in the Square about 4pm followed by tea in the village hall or a drink in one of the pubs if you wish.  Information on the forthcoming walk is advertised around the village and on the website calendar.

Modification Orders

The following additions and amendments to the Rights of Way in Braughing have been submitted to the County Council for evaluation:

  • Change from footpath to bridleway for footpath 33 and extension.  This path starts at Ideal Farm Braughing Friars and runs south behind the old poultry houses but stops abruptly.  An extension has been requested along field boundaries to exit to the public road opposite the Warren Farm entrance.  A decision is expected late in 2007.
  • A new path from Maltings Lane near the ford, along the river to Fleece Lane bridge.  This is shown on the 1925 Ordnance Survey map but was not included on the Definitive Map.  A decision is expected mid-2008.
  • A new path from the end of Hull Lane following field boundaries crossing the old railway line and joining the A10.  This application will take some time.
  • Change from footpath to bridleway for footpath 26 and extension.  The path starts at Hobbs Lane, Dassels and finishes abruptly at the parish boundary.  The extension will link to bridleway 33 in Buntingford parish.
  • We also believe Little Hormead parish have applied for the change from footpath to bridleway for footpath 22 in their parish.  This path is a bridleway on the Braughing side of the parish boundary but a footpath on the Little Hormead side.

Maintenance Work

As many of you will know, the entrance to the permissive path through the Bone has been badly eroded by the rain earlier this year, and the ditch is clogged with vegetation.  Some machinery will be required to clear the ditch and we are currently discussing funding for the work with the Parish Council and it may be that a working party will be arranged to do this work.  If you can help please contact us.
