The Society was first formed in the 1970s but lapsed in the 1980s. It was revived in 1998 after an oral history course was held in Braughing, organised by Cambridge University's Board of Continuing Education. The local people attending this course generated many hours of information, recorded on audio cassette tapes, about the village and the people who live here. These have placed with the Society's archives with annotated summaries and transcripts. The Society continues to record local people talking about their lives and knowledge of the area. No Washing Machines Then, published in 2004, relates people's stories and memories before the Second World War. It is illustrated with many photographs. The Society's Archives also include a small library of books and material about Braughing for use by members. From time to time we print short books members. Recent subjects include: personal reminiscences of life in Braughing; remarkable years of fund-raising that helped the community acquire a playing field in the 1960s and 1970s, and refurbish St Mary's Church in the 1970s and 1980s; transcripts of indentures and deeds for one house going back to 1650; A Sunday School accounts book. Forthcoming: a Short History of Braughing, with photographs. The Society meets on one Tuesday evening per month at 8.15 pm (not August or December), usually in the Church Hall. See the Events and News page for details of meetings or click on the link below. Visits are made to local sites and there are practical activities, such as archaeological field walking in conjunction with the County Archaeology Department.
