Traffic Volume and Speed Surveys Print E-mail

The issue of increasing traffic flows and speeding traffic has been a concern of the residents of Braughing parish for some years. In May 2004, the Parish Council along with a group of residents carried out a speed survey on the B1368, along Ford Street and in The Street with the assistance of a speed detector device provided by Hertfordshire Constabulary. Since then, the new portion of the A10 dual carriageway south of Puckeridge has opened. It is a common belief amongst parishioners that since the opening of the new road, traffic flows have increased further and speeding traffic has worsened.

Hertfordshire Constabulary carried out a continuous traffic survey between 20th and 27th October 2006, which produced some startling results. The survey was carried out in a 40mph zone between Hay Street and Green End.

In 2006 the Parish Council requested that Hertfordshire Highways carry out a further series of traffic surveys to measure the volume and speed of traffic along the B1368. These surveys were carried out between 8 and 14 December 2006 in three separate venues using strips across the road providing 24 hour monitoring.

A further speed survey was carried out in Malting Lane between 30 November and 6 December 2006.

Cllr Peter Boylan obtained the results of the above surveys and carried out an analysis of the data. This resulted in the attached report, which has since been shared with Hertfordshire Police, Hertfordshire Highways, County Councillor Jane Pitman and District Councillor Rose Cheswright as well as our local MP Oliver Heald. Pressure is being applied to the responsible authorities to ensure something is done, not only about the fears and concerns of parishioners, but also the hard evidence contained in this report.
