1.6 Volunteering at local charities

There are many local charities who are always looking for extra volunteers. The list below only covers some which you might want to consider:

Age UK Herts

This provides many services for elderly people including Help in the Home, regular visits, regular phone call service and assistance with technical issues. Further information about volunteering at Age UK Herts can be found here>>>

Isabel Hospice

Provides help for those who are terminally ill, and their families. The main office and In Patient Unit is in Welwyn Garden City. Volunteering can take many forms, including:-

  • Helping at local shops e.g. Buntingford or Ware
  • Help at the warehouse in Welwyn Garden City
  • Reception desk 
  • Bereavement counselling
  • Gardening at In-Patient Unit or Day Centre at Hall Grove, Welwyn Garden City
  • Driving people to events or appointments
  • Helping with room care
  • Flower arranging
  • Fund raising

Samaritans

The local Samaritans branch is situated in Ware at 1, Cross Street.

Samaritans provides emotional support for a wide range of people, not just those who are suicidal. People contact Samaritans for a variety of reasons including loneliness, depression, mental health problems, relationship problems, sexual orientation concerns, bereavement and abuse. 

The support is mainly in the form of telephone calls but also face-to-face visits, emails, texts, and letters. More information about volunteering at Samaritans click here>>>

Mind

Mind provides support for people with mental health problems. There is a local branch of Mind in Ware.
